Will Jan Lokpal end corruption in India?

India celebrated when the government, along with all political parties, accepted clauses of Anna Hazare’s Jan Lokpal Bill. Even though compelled to do so because of mass hysteria, the phenomenon clearly shows that citizens of India were successful in making the government do what they wanted.

However, this should not be taken as an end in itself. Even if the Jan Lokpal Bill is passed by the parliament, in its current state, it won’t be able to end corruption. The fight against corruption has to go on.

Before we evaluate the effectiveness of Jan Lokpal Bill, first we need to understand the bill. The Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen’s ombudsman Bill) is a draft anti-corruption bill drawn up by prominent civil society activists like Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, etc. seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body that would investigate corruption cases, complete the investigation within a year and envisages trial in the case getting over in the next one year. Read More!
